Suez War
October 29, 1956: Israel attacks the Sinai Peninsula (Suez
War)
This attack followed the announcement of the nationalization
of the Suez Canal by Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nassier, which was followed
by a ban on Israeli ships from crossing the canal. With this attack, Israel
hoped to occupy the Gulf of Aqaba at the end of the Red Sea to serve as a
passageway for its ships.
Two days later, Britain and France deployed paratroopers
around the Suez Canal. The purpose of this three-way attack on Egypt was to
thwart nationalization. Before nationalization, the Suez Canal was under
British and French colonial rule.
For several months, the three aggressor countries
successfully occupied the Suez Canal, but due to the pressure of world opinion
and UN intervention, they left Egypt in 1957. This war is known in the history
of Arab-Israeli warfare as the Suez War.
